Sixth annual Walk for Warmth

WHERE
First United Methodist Church
516 Church Street
Evanston, IL 60201
START DATE

The sixth annual Walk for Warmth kicks off on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Monday, January 20, at 11 a.m. at First United Methodist Church, 516 Church St. As Interfaith Action of Evanston’s largest fundraiser, this family friendly event funds the Overnight Shelter, which provides life-saving warmth from mid-October through mid-May, to those without homes.

This year, for the first time, walkers can choose one of two routes: the traditional two-mile walk through Central Evanston, passing many of the nine churches that host the Overnight Shelter on a rotating schedule, or a half-mile version centered on the area around First United. Those who are unable to walk are encouraged to come to the kickoff program at the church, which begins at 11 a.m.

“As we have continued to expand the number of nights we are open, our costs to operate the shelter continue to increase, so the funding is critical to keep our shelter operating,” says Sue Berube, executive director of IAE. Those costs include staff salaries, laundry, supplies and more.

Many of Interfaith Action’s member faith communities are actively forming teams to participate but everyone is welcome and walk and help the Walk for Warmth reach its $38.000 goal. This family-friendly event is a great way to honor Dr. King’s legacy and fight for economic justice.
